Basics for making S’mores

Ingredients for Classic S’mores

Chocolate: Hershey’s milk chocolate is the tried-and-true classic, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Any chocolate that melts well—dark, white, or even your favorite candy bar—can make your s’more unforgettable.

Graham Crackers: The foundation of every great s’more. Stick with the traditional kind for that nostalgic flavor, or mix it up with chocolate or cinnamon grahams if you want a little twist.

Marshmallows: Store-bought marshmallows are perfect here (no need to fuss with homemade unless you’re feeling extra fancy). Choose regular size for balance or go big with jumbo if you love extra gooeyness.

Step-by-step instructions (classic method)

You can make s’mores three ways — campfire, grill, or air fryer — but below I’ll walk you through the classic campfire approach. (If you’re avoiding an open flame, the air fryer is your best no-flame option.)

  1. Prep everything. Break your chocolate into pieces that fit your graham crackers, and split each graham into 8 pieces (or whatever size you prefer). Thread a marshmallow onto a fire-resistant skewer or roasting stick.
  2. Roast the marshmallow. Hold the marshmallow a few inches from the flame and rotate slowly so it browns evenly — roast until it’s golden and pillowy, or char the outside if you like that smoky bite. Patience = melty marshmallow.
  3. Build the base. Place a piece of chocolate on one graham piece.
  4. Add the marshmallow. Slide the toasted marshmallow off the skewer onto the chocolate (or press the graham up to the marshmallow and transfer gently).
  5. Top and press. Add the second graham piece, press briefly so the warm marshmallow and chocolate start to melt together, then hold for a few seconds.
  6. Cool slightly, then enjoy. Let it rest 10–20 seconds so it’s not lava-hot, then dig in.
  7. Safety note. Use fire-safe tools, supervise kids around the fire, and keep a safe distance from flames.

Want the quick grill or air-fryer method written out too? I can drop those in as short alternatives.

Can S’mores be gluten-free?

Yes! 🙌 S’mores can absolutely be made gluten free, and it’s super easy to do. Here’s how:

  • Graham Crackers: Swap the traditional kind for a gluten-free version. Brands like Schär, Kinnikinnick, or even gluten-free options from Nabisco make solid substitutes.
  • Marshmallows: Most marshmallows are naturally gluten free (just double-check the label to be safe).
  • Chocolate: Pure chocolate bars (like Hershey’s milk or dark) are typically gluten free, but again, always check packaging if you’re sensitive.

👉 With those simple swaps, you can enjoy gluten free s’mores that taste just as good as the classic.
